Maximum Residency Rule (MRR)

Time Limit for Completion of a Degree: Residency Requirement

A student must complete their program of study within the prescribed residency period (see program-specific residency limits below). If a student is unable to complete the program within the prescribed period, they may request: Up to one year at a time. No specific duration, subject to approval.

 

Extension of MRR

Waiver of MRR

Stage Applied During or before exhausting the initial MRR period. Beyond the allowable period of extension.
Duration Up to one year at a time. No specific duration, subject to approval.
Approving Authority Dean of the Faculty. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA).

How to apply for a waiver/extension of MRR:

  1. Log in to the Student Portal and submit your application for readmission.
  2. Upload the required documents.
  1. Letter addressed to the Dean/VCAA
  2. Supporting document
  3. Detailed Plan of Study
  1. Wait for the approval of your application.
  2. Once approved, proceed with enrollment.

Note: Leave of Absence (LOA) will not be counted towards the Maximum Residency Rule for both undergraduate and graduate students (approved by the Board of Regents at its 1379th Meeting on 3 April 2023). Students are “permitted to apply for LOA for a maximum of two (2) years (aggregated) during their whole stay in the University” (Art. 401, Revised UP Code).
