The Maximum Residency Rule (MRR)
Time Limit for Completion of a Degree: Residency Requirement
A student must complete their program of study within the prescribed residency period (see program-specific residency limits below). If a student is unable to complete the program within the prescribed period, they may request: Up to one year at a time. No specific duration, subject to approval.

How to apply for a waiver/extension of MRR:
- Log in to the Student Portal and submit your application for readmission.
- Upload the required documents.
- Letter addressed to the Dean/VCAA
- Supporting document
- Detailed Plan of Study
- Wait for the approval of your application.
- Once approved, proceed with enrollment.
Note: Leave of Absence (LOA) will not be counted towards the Maximum Residency Rule for both undergraduate and graduate students (approved by the Board of Regents at its 1379th Meeting on 3 April 2023). Students are “permitted to apply for LOA for a maximum of two (2) years (aggregated) during their whole stay in the University” (Art. 401, Revised UP Code).
